Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

After feeling sorry about having to say goodbye to Belize, we took the coach to Playa Del Carmen on the Mexican Yucatan peninsular. When the coach turned up 2 hours late to pick us up, we couldn't believe it. It was the same coach that took us from Flores to Belize - the exact same one. All of a sudden, we were not looking forward to the 5 hour trip.

The good thing was that it didn't rain the whole journey so there were no indoor showers. After arriving at Playa Del Carmen, we headed for a hotel that the Lonely Planet had recommended. The Casa De Las Flores had a pool, the rooms were nice and again it only worked out at 25 pounds a night.

Playa is another resort overrun by Americans, although there are a few Europeans here. The first night we sat down to a meal only for the table next to us to start talking in a strong brummy accent. Jo all of a sudden felt right at home!!

The 2nd day we woke, and for some reason Shaun had come out in a big rash all over his body and his face had swollen quite badly. After a quick visit to the doctor's, they said that it is common with tourists in Mexico and it is caused by a parasite in fish dishes. A quick injection of hydrocortizone and 12 hours later he was right as rain again. The joys of travelling.

We booked on another 3-day dive package as we haad heard some good reviews of the dive sites here. One of the better places being the fresh water underground caves (called cenotes) that can only be found in Mexico, and nowhere else in the world. When we dived there, the water is perfectly clear meaning that the visibility underwater was over 100 metres in places. It was a great day's diving. The following day we went back to the Ocean to a site just off Cozumel, an island 6 miles off the coast. Again the visibility was great and there were lots of swim-thru's and caverns to explore. We managed to get some really good photos.

We both feel a little sad that we have now finished in Mexico, but on the other hand looking forward to seeing what Florida has to offer. Disneyland here we come.
