We caught the bus to Mexico City and arrived at about 7pm on the 14th. What a nightmare!! It took hours and seemed as though it would never end. We didn't really know what to expect from the capital but we were pleasantly surprised once we had a good look round. The streets were clean and it was quite cosmopolitan for a change. We found a local bakery / cafe where we had breakfast each morning just across from the hotel where we were staying. They did a half decent omelette and the fresh bread and cakes went down a real treat. They even served Nescafe coffee. As we wandered around the streets one day we came across a protest. The people were stopping the cars and passers by but we weren't quite sure what they were protestng about. It must have been something important though because they were all naked. There must have been about 200 people in the middle of the city all in the buff!! Trouble was the youngest there was about 50. Mexico City also has a huge number of taxis. Most of them being VW Beetles. They seemed to rip out the front passenger seat to allow their customers to get in and out of the back. Still, they all looked pretty cool though. Something else we also noticed was that it seemd to be a lot colder here than most places we had been before. It probably had something to do with the altitude we were at - about 1000m above sea level. We had to dig around in our bags to get our jumpers out again althoug it didn't last too long as we were only there for 3 days before flying to Flores in Guatemala.
