Boston and New York

Well, we arrived safely in Boston and took the next few days looking round the sights in Downtown and around Harvard. The hostels here seem to be very different to what we were used to in Oz. Every man and his dog (literally dogs) seem to stay in them, and it's not just for backpackers. The smell of old people was quite over-powering!! Harvard University was quite impressive and we could not have timed it much better as it was fresher's week so all the students were returning from their summer breaks, so the place had a real buzz about it.

New York is a massive place, and we have been here 6 days. You don't appreciate the size of it until you go up the Empire State Building and see it from a height. The fact that Central Park is 2.5 miles long and is only a very small part of Manhatten puts it into some perspective. Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge at dusk one night was great as all the lights were coming on in the skyscrapers, so we had an excellent view of the Manhatten skyline. We also had a chance to take in a show on Broadway, The Perfect Crime, which was not as big as the more famous ones, so it was far more intimate. In fact, being on the second row, we were only feet from the front of the stage. And you can't beat 2 tickets for 25 quid!!

We have already taken advantage of the stong exchange rate here and Jo has stocked up on clothes and make-up from Macy's and Bloomingdales, whilst my sunglasses from my last visit to New York finally gave up the ghost when an arm fell off yesterday. Funnily enough they don't seem to stay on too well now so I have been looking for a replacement.

The food here comes in large or extra large portions, and we have already been caught out ordering 2 dishes when 1 between us would have been enough. The weather is great here as well. Apart fronm 2 cloudy days, it has been sunny with temperatures in the mid 20's. At least we are making up for the crap summer we had in the UK.

Next stop -Philadelphia.
